Man first walked on the moon on my 8th birthday giving a generation of kids like myself a brand new ambition, to become an astronaut (or at least to go on a 'space holiday' by 2001). Neither have been realised but when JFK proposed the idea back in 1961, the space programme sparked a technology revolution that helped to develop much of what we take for granted today such as satellite TV, water purifiers, tyres, freeze dried food, memory foam and artificial limbs to name but a few. Apollo. That was a bloody good idea.
